The initial hurt and pain of not being able to continue your own gene pool can be reduced somewhat with the assistance of third parties who offer assistance as egg donors, sperm donors and surrogate moms.  Egg donation is an option for people who have poor quality eggs, no or low ovarian reserve or who are predisposed to passing on a genetic deficiency.  Sperm donation is an option for people with low or non sperm mobility and/ or count.   Surrogacy is the most complex of third party reproduction options and available to people who have had hysterectomies, uterine problems or a history of an inability to carry a baby to term for reasons of several miscarriages, premature births, high blood pressure or medical conditions that are exacerbated with pregnancy.

South African egg donation and sperm donation are anonymous and confidential, although recipients of donor eggs and/ or donor sperm will have extensive information about their donor for informative purposes.  The absence of an egg donor registry ensures complete privacy about conception for both recipients and donors.  This means that the child may or may not know details of their genes.  This is dependent on the feelings and beliefs of the parents.  Surrogacy cannot be confidential as there is clearly no pregnancy for the commissioning parent and also quite obviously a pregnancy with no child for the surrogate.  A surrogacy relationship is also a delicate and sensitive one, and needs agreement, legal support and alignment for both parties.
